Resident Education Resources
Why?
Affordable housing is crucial for young students’ education. Studies conducted by the Urban Institute and Habitat for Humanity determine that stable housing raises test scores, increases graduation rates, and shows higher rates of economic mobility. A study from Raj Chetty concludes that families that use a housing voucher were more likely to go to college and earned 31% more as adults than students who were not on a housing voucher. A home is a center for a child’s social, family, and personal time, so changing households, overcrowded homes, and even unsanitary conditions are lowering their ability to be successful individuals. While guaranteeing affordable housing to all may not be possible, there are significant ways to benefit low-income family’s education through affordable housing. Some solutions are to include school quality in fair housing assessments to ensure access to high-quality schools, focus on schools in community development to improve educational opportunities, increase affordable housing in neighborhoods with good schools to provide better access for low-income families and ensure housing vouchers support access to quality schools to promote educational equity. These resources are dedicated for students/management companies to access their educational needs.
